Given that car safety inspections only come once a year, it is important to be ready when the time comes. Yet, while you might think everything looks ready to go, giving your windshield another check might be worthwhile. Chips and cracks are not only a hazard while on the road but can also prevent you from acquiring your certification sticker. To avoid any surprises come inspection day, Allstate Auto Glass outlines what you should look for and how to fix it.
Before your inspection, give your front and back windshield a good look-over. If you spot any damage, the next step is deciding what measures to take to repair it. Depending on its severity, some windshield issues may require a complete replacement to pass inspection. In Massachusetts, windshield cracks cannot be within the critical viewing area or larger than two inches outside of the critical viewing area. In New Hampshire, Connecticut & Rhode Island, windshield standards can differ, but as a rule of thumb, fixing any breaks, lines, or any damage you see on your windshield before it becomes a problem is wise. Cracks and chips can expand and lead to further damage if they go untended.
If your inspector finds a missed crack or chip, many states offer solutions to help get your windshield appropriately fixed or replaced. In most cases, you won’t be able to drive your car until it’s repaired. Thankfully, states like Massachusetts have protocols to make it easier. According to MA’s cracked windshield law, insurers must offer full glass replacement coverage with either a $0 or a $100 deductible, making replacing your windshield much more affordable. Yet, if you push off your windshield repairs and continue to fail inspection, you will be stuck with a rejection sticker, and your vehicle will not be allowed on the road.
