The way drivers pay tolls is changing in Massachusetts. Across the E-ZPass network, transportation agencies are moving away from the familiar plastic transponder and toward RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) windshield sticker tags.
Massachusetts began rolling out the new stickers on March 1, 2026, initially issuing them for new accounts and replacement tags. According to Massachusetts Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver, the new sticker system is easier to manufacture and install, and less noticeable for customers who prefer a lower-profile look.
The change is designed to simplify toll collection and reduce equipment costs, but it also changes how drivers use E-ZPass in everyday situations.
Note: You can continue using your current transponder for now. The new transponders will be accepted throughout the E-ZPass national network. Massachusetts-issued transponders and Pay By Plate online programs will also continue to work when no transponder is on the vehicle.
If you drive in Massachusetts and use E-ZPass, this change could affect what happens during a windshield replacement. This is something our team at Allstate Auto Glass is closely tracking, so you don’t have to worry about the details.
For years, many drivers treated their E-ZPass like a shared device, moving one transponder between multiple vehicles in a household. That flexibility is going away.
Because the new sticker tags are designed for one-time use and are not transferable between vehicles, each car will need its own tag. You can no longer move a transponder back and forth depending on who’s driving.
That also changes how you handle situations like renting a car. Instead of moving your transponder, you’ll need to log into your account and temporarily add the rental vehicle’s license plate for the duration of your trip.
According to Massachusetts E-ZPass guidance, the sticker should be installed:
Proper placement ensures the tag can be read accurately at toll points.
Because the sticker is attached directly to the glass, it cannot be reused once removed.
If your windshield is replaced, the sticker will be removed along with it.
The good news is that there are no fees for lost, damaged, or unreturned sticker transponders, so replacing your windshield won’t cost you an extra toll tag fee.
According to EZDriveMA guidance: “Remove the sticker transponder from the windshield, mark as Inactive on your account, and dispose of the sticker. A new sticker transponder can be requested by logging into your account online (EZDriveMA.com), visiting one of our EZDriveMA Customer Service Centers, or contacting Customer Service at 1-877-627-7745.”
The takeaway is simple: A new windshield means you will need a new E-ZPass sticker.
At Allstate Auto Glass, we make this process easy. If your vehicle has an E-ZPass sticker, our team will remove it during replacement and help you understand what to do next, so you’re not caught off guard at the toll booth.
The transition to E-ZPass sticker tags is still evolving, and guidance may continue to change as more drivers make the switch.
At Allstate Auto Glass, we’re staying on top of the latest updates, so you don’t have to navigate it on your own.
If your windshield needs to be replaced, we’ll make sure you understand what to expect and the next steps you need to take.
